The 'Phone'al Conclusion

Image
All in all, after spending various time segments in the gym, I got to see what it is was like to be an outsider looking in. I was very pleased with the information I have received from my research at the gym in Goldstein Fitness Center. I got to witness the energy people gave off on a Friday, how people have made their phone apart of the workout and the gym etiquette and culture the gym has created over time. as seen in my previous blogs, the blog that I enjoyed doing the most was "Phones intrude." This is because most people who attend this gym literally do not get off their phone the entire time. It was eye opening too see how our devices have taken over social spaces that do not require the use of our cell phone. In fact, it looks like to me these devices are very distracting and addicting to the point where people can't put them down not even to work out their body. Very mind boggling to wrap my head around this but during my preliminary research, I have found that I ...

Gym Ettiquete

The gym in the Gold Stein Fitness Center to me was the epitome of gym etiquette. People interacted with a lot of respect for one another. The gym was always cleaned up and when one person finished, they made sure they cleaned up after themselves and racked the weights accordingly. As I continued my observations, I came across many people who expressed themselves with gym manners. When walking in and heading over to a station, I grabbed a seat on a machine that was not being used. My first interaction with someone in the gym was when that particular person came up to me and asked me if I was using the machine and if I was, if I could please let them know when I finished. Not once did I feel rushed nor bothered in my first interaction with someone in this gym. Through time, I believe that this gym has set a culture of its own. The people who have used this gym in the past made sure that simple gym rules were applied and maintained and it has continued through time. This gym is a ve...

Finger Muscles!

As I observe, not once did I feel like a weirdo sitting down with my phone starring at people workout and maneuver through the gym. Many worked out with their phones in their hand or at least in their sight. While walking through the gym I could’ve sworn people almost every person who was not interacting with another person between a set was on their phone. This one dude literally couldn't take his eyes off his phone. After every set he finished, he immediately turned his attention too his phone. This looked very common throughout the gym as I observed how much a cellular phone mattered too people. If they weren’t on their phone they had ear pods in listening too music. People were very dependent on their devices. It seemed too me if somehow someway there phone would turn off, their whole attitude towards their workout would immediately be affected. This is just a theory of mine when it comes to people and their phone at their gym. They are literally in their own world. Ther...

IT'S FRIDAY AND THE BODY KNOWS IT!

Image
The day is Friday. It’s Friday and the body knows it! Friday is the day where everyone wants to finish their week off strong. As I enter the Fitness Center I hear the song “Happy” by Pharell Williams on the speakers. While walking in, I got a huge smile and hello from the front desk assistant. The setting was set. Whoever walked into this gym was destined for a great work out and a great Friday. It was around 12 pm when I walked in and the gym was decently filled. There was no classes scheduled for the day so I'm sure the people who were in the gym got to sleep in and wake up at a decent time. Before walking into the gym, you have to pass through a room where most of the stretching takes place. I witnessed two girls interacting with each other while one preformed a stretched and the other helped her get the best of that particular stretch. Here at this particular gym, many times you see groups of 2 or 3 walk in together and I came to the conclusion that a group of friends is defin...

Let's Gym

Image
In class we were recently exposed to the new project of creating a blog about a social space.  This is an assignment that includes completing field research on a subject along with analyzing notes and film, including much more.  I have never done anything like this before, but I am ready to tackle the challenge. Let's begin. Within the next few blog posts, I will be discussing the social interactions of the Goldstein Fitness Center. The Fitness Center has multiple areas where students, faculty and members can get their workouts in. The gym, dance room, basketball courts and even a swimming pool. This center is seen as a sanctuary for people who have the motivation to strive toward their goals. I will be analyzing only one area of the Fitness Center. I will be conducting my research inside the gym. I have always been one to go to gyms and workout but never have I stepped out my body frame to actually understand what was really going on throughout this social space...
