Let's Gym

In class we were recently exposed to the new project of creating a blog about a social space.  This is an assignment that includes completing field research on a subject along with analyzing notes and film, including much more.  I have never done anything like this before, but I am ready to tackle the challenge. Let's begin.

Within the next few blog posts, I will be discussing the social interactions of the Goldstein Fitness Center. The Fitness Center has multiple areas where students, faculty and members can get their workouts in. The gym, dance room, basketball courts and even a swimming pool. This center is seen as a sanctuary for people who have the motivation to strive toward their goals.

I will be analyzing only one area of the Fitness Center. I will be conducting my research inside the gym. I have always been one to go to gyms and workout but never have I stepped out my body frame to actually understand what was really going on throughout this social space. Many people with many different feelings do in fact contribute to the environment of the gym. Such as energy, mood and emotion. Interactions between gym-goers is very common due to the fact that the ambience of the gym in goldstein fitness center is very welcoming and you are bound to walk into a class mate or an old pal while working out.

The question I developed for this social space was if these same levels of interaction would fair the same if it was a different day of the week, such as the beginning or end. I also want to conduct research on how people interact throughout this area and if possible look at people’s tempo or pace while they workout. I can’t wait too see what this environment consists of.
